A Professional Chartered Civil and Environmental Engineer and former MD of the Pennine Water Group (PWG) at the University of Sheffield, with a research and practice career spanning some 60 years in the design and science of urban water systems. Recipient of the Joint Committee on Urban Drainage of International Water Association/International Association of Hydraulic Research 2014 triennial Career achievement award. Member of the UK’s (Defra & DTI) Foresight Future Flooding research team in the early 2000s then to Sir Michael Pitt in 2007, Scientific Adviser to the UK House of Lords Science and Technology Committee inquiry into Water Management in England in 2006. Research leader in the UK Building Knowledge for a Changing Climate programme on adapting local drainage to climate change 2002-2006. Co-author of numerous Construction Industry Research and Information Association reports, including retrofitting SuDS, SuDS manual (2015), design for exceedance of urban drainage and co-developing the CIRIA economic assessment tool for blue-green infrastructure (B£ST) with application to various projects. Co-advisor to the Government of Wales on implementation of Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act (2016-17). Scientific adviser to Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for flood risk in the Loire Basin (2009) and Greater Paris (2012). OECD consultant for future need for water and wastewater infrastructure in 2004 and in 2018. Numerous international projects, including in the Netherlands (e.g. the Room for the River programme) and Australia, for example as part of the Cooperative Research Programme on Water Sensitive Cities on flood resilience (2014-2017). Several EU funded trans-national partnership projects (most recently, BEGIN: https://northsearegion.eu/begin/index.html). More than 600 publications in refereed journals, books, book chapters and at conferences. Led the team Awarded the biennial International Water Association (IWA) prize for Research Excellence in Support of Sustainable Urban Water Management in September 2008. Founder International Water Association working group on Sewer Processes and primary editor and contributor of the IWA Scientific and Technical Report on Sewer Solids (2004). Co-author of the IWA manual on Performance Indicators for wastewater services (2002). Hosted 4 international conferences, including Chairing the IWA/IAHR International Conference on Urban Drainage in Edinburgh in 2008., and for papers from ICE and ASCE.
