The Vistula District – The Heart of Warsaw: Potential and Perspectives

Open, friendly, diverse. If only such a district existed in Warsaw.
But it does! Warsaw’s informal 19th district — the Vistula District (Dzielnica Wisła) — has become an institution. Right in the heart of the city, we have a space that lets us enjoy nature and take a break from the urban hustle and bustle. Natura 2000 sites, beaches and boulevards, as well as restaurants, sports clubs and a wide range of river services. There’s also Przystań Warszawa, the Czerniakowski and Żerański Ports, the Kamień Educational Pavilion and Żerański Park, recreation zones, open-air galleries, and places dedicated to street and land art.

Year after year, the Warsaw Vistula attracts more and more people, offering a spacious area where you can escape the big-city noise and feel like you’re on holiday. Every day, an average of 6 tonnes of waste is collected from the riverside areas — and as much as 2.5 tonnes of it does not end up in bins. What isn’t thrown away properly becomes a threat to everyone: people, animals, as well as plants and the water itself. That is why, for over a decade, the City of Warsaw’s campaign has been promoting good practices and responsible recreation — benefiting not only people, but nature too.

The Vistula District has become a unique and exceptional part of Warsaw. Under the Dzielnica Wisła banner, not only is an educational and informational campaign carried out, but a range of other initiatives that bring the space to life as well. These include sports and cultural events. The most important ones include Warszawski Plażowy, the Opening of the Summer Season, the Vistula Festival, the Riverside Equinox, the Vistula District Winter Swimming School, the Year-End Celebrations in the Vistula District, and a dozen other events co-funded and created in cooperation with non-governmental organisations. The campaign was created to change attitudes towards riverside areas — to see them as shared spaces, open to residents.

The Vistula District is for everyone!
