Pedestrian and cycling footbridges

Pedestrian and cycling footbridges constitute elements of transport infrastructure with a clearly defined function, namely ensuring the continuity of pedestrian and bicycle movement over terrain obstacles such as watercourses, transport arteries, or terrain depressions.

The form of a footbridge is the result of functional conditions, formal and legal requirements, and structural solutions, while at the same time remaining closely dependent on the location of the structure. The context of the place includes both its physical characteristics—natural and anthropogenic—as well as intangible aspects related to history, cultural significance, and spatial identity.

Using selected examples, the authors present the process of shaping pedestrian and cycling footbridges, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the specificity of a place in the choice of form, materials, and elements of equipment. According to the authors, structures designed in this way have the potential to become an integral part of the landscape, forming a coherent and legible spatial composition with their surroundings.
